Inflammation In Todays Performance Horses
As avid horsemen and women, we realize that the vigorous daily training and competitions we put our performance horses though is necessary and unfortunately can cause many chronic inflammatory responses in joints, tendons, ligaments and much more. Inflammation is the root cause for many of the problems that keep our equine athletes from competing at their highest potential and/or competing at all. Whether we're just maintaining healthy joints, body soreness, gastro-intestinal function (colic) or recovering from injuries and surgeries it is essential to look at inflammation.
Inflammation, by definition, isn’t a bad thing. In fact, it can be a good thing. When the body is injured, inflammation is part of the immune response -- the body’s healing mechanism -- signaling the white blood cells to attack the injured area to prevent further damage. The problem starts when acute inflammation, the temporary type, turns chronic. All of those chemicals and cells keep on fighting after the fight should be over. That’s when we get further swelling, pain, joint issues, compromised organs and systems and many processes that cause or contribute to many other diseases and conditions. This is why inflammation, when healthy, is in careful balance and maintaining that balance is so important!
The most commonly administered medications for treating painful conditions in horses are phenylbutazone (Bute),flunixin meglumine (Banamine),ketoprofen (Ketofen), and firocoxib (Equioxx). These are classified as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. These work by blocking the prostaglandin cycle that is part of the inflammatory cascade.
These both exert effects on both COX-1 and COX-2 inflammatory components and thereby have additional and potentially adverse effects on stomach, colon and kidney function. This occurs due to their interference with the “good” prostaglandins that produce protective mucus for the lining of the gastrointestinal tract.
Harmful Effects of NSAIDs
In some cases, the over reliance on NSAIDs has proved deadly. Annually, 76,000 people are hospitalized from NSAID-induced gastrointestinal complications. The American Medical Association estimates that from 50-80 percent of those hospitalized for gastrointestinal bleeding are taking some form of NSAIDs. At this stage in the medication-induced bleeding, there is a ten percent chance of fatality.(2)
NSAIDs lethal effects result from the inhibition of the biosynthesis of prostaglandins. NSAIDs block cyclo-oxygenase, the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the reactions of arachidonic acid to endoperoxide compounds. This process results in the inhibition of gastric prostaglandin E, a hormone which protects the lining of the stomach from acid. After prolonged and frequent ingestion of NSAIDs, the stomach remains defenseless and at increased susceptibility to ulcers, kidney damage and colic.
the natural & powerful balancer for a healthy inflammatory response
Serrapeptase is a protein digesting enzyme which breaks down “non living” matter in the equine body. This may promote a reduction in levels of dead tissue in the circulatory system, promoting smoother healthier flowing blood. Fibrin often builds up throughout the body and manifests itself in many undesirable and unhealthy outcomes. Serrapeptase fights fibrin build up in the cardiovascular system, organs and muscle tissue. Studies on the use of Serrapeptase are numerous and reports reference successful use aids and assists in the fight against many inflammatory conditions such as:
Arthritis and Stiffness
IAD (Inflammatory Airway Disease)
DSLD (Degenerative suspensory ligament desmitis) Laminitis
Muscle Soreness & Post-Workout
Moon Blindness ( equine recurrent uveitis-ERU)
… and more!
Fibrin is a protein formed that can significantly impact our horses health, general well-being and performance. This formation of excess fibrin is documented to be responsible for scar tissue, thrombus formation and inflammation along with its associated pain. There is tremendous amount of research backing up the positive effect of systemic enzymes!
Although these contemporary medicines for inflammation can be effective they are not sustainable and or healthy long term. This is why Serraquin ES15 is a great alternative! Serrapeptase, a fundamental ingredient in Serraquin ES15, is a natural COX-2 inhibitor, a natural pain killer, parts of Asia and Europe have been using Serrapeptase for decades instead of the more common traditional steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs prescribed today.
Besides reducing inflammation, one of serrapeptases' most profound benefits is reduction of pain, due to its ability to block the release of pain-inducing amines from inflamed tissues. Physicians throughout Europe and Asia have recognized the anti-inflammatory and pain-blocking benefits of this naturally occurring substance and are using it in treatment as an alternative to NSAIDs and Corticosteroids.
In Germany and other European countries, serrapeptase is a common treatment for inflammatory and traumatic swellings, and much of the research that exists on this substance is of European origin. One double-blind study was conducted by German researchers to determine the effect of serrapeptase on post-operative swelling and pain. This study involved sixty-six patients who were treated surgically for fresh rupture of the lateral collateral ligament of the knee. On the third post-operative day, the group receiving serrapeptase exhibited a 50 percent reduction of swelling, compared to the controls. The patients receiving serrapeptase also became more rapidly pain-free than the controls, and by the tenth day, the pain had disappeared completely.
Unlike many of the alternative therapies on the market such as glucosamine, chondroitin, devils claw, turmeric and MSM for joint therapy, systemic enzymes use a different and very unique approach to fight inflammation and scar tissue. Serraquin ES15 consists of a enterically coated serrapeptase, MSM, Amla, Rutin and 11 other systemic enzymes plus probiotics that help balance the inflammatory response while also supporting the gastro-intestinal function. This is vitally important for acute and chronic inflammatory conditions which start to break down the joint and it's functionality creating less mobility and function.
Serraquin ES15, works as a powerful natural anti-inflammatory when released into the bloodstream. Clinical studies show that it's fundamental ingredient serrapeptase induces fibrinolytic,
anti-inflammatory and anti-edemic (prevents swelling and fluid retention) activity in a number of tissues, such as the lungs, a condition in performance horses known as IAD. For decades serrapeptase has been researched for its many fibrinolytic and ant-inflammatory properties with great success!
A ONE-OF-A-KIND ANTI-INFLAMMATORY FORMULA
Serraquin ES15 consists of a potent enzyme blend that helps Support Joint & Connective Tissue in Performance Horses. Serrapeptase a fundamental ingredient in Serraquin ES15, is known worldwide for it's ability to promote a healthy inflammatory response and maintaining healthy fibrin levels that in excess can cause a build-up of scar tissue and adhesions.
